Montclair Golf Club is a Private, 36 hole golf facility located in West Orange, New Jersey. Montclair has four 9 – hole courses that are conveniently named, The First nine, The Second nine, The Third nine and The Fourth nine,
“Montclair†is generally considered to be the 13th oldest golf club in America. In 1899, the first 18 hole course, designed by Tom Bendelow, was established at roughly the present location of the first and second nines. A new clubhouse was built on a site near the end of today’s driving range.
In 1920, Donald Ross was commissioned to design the 27 holes of the first, second and third nines. In 1928, the a fourth nine was designed by Charles Banks. The original designs have been improved over the years by the work of two of Montclair’s most recognized Robert Trent Jones joined Montclair and son Rees Jones
As mentioned, there are four sets of nine holes and all four begin and end at the clubhouse. This means that, by starting alternately at the four first holes and moving alternately to the other three, you can play twelve golf courses, or at least twelve different combinations of 18 holes. The Montclair members believe that this makes their club unique.
Any combination of Montclair’s four nines would measure somewhat more than 6,000 yards and each plays to a par of 35. On every one there are interesting holes with what, in golfing conversation, is called “character.â€
